Getting started
What is FlipSQE?
FlipSQE is a set of flashcards and practice questions for candidates preparing for SQE1 and SQE2. It shows you each card just before you would forget it, so your time goes on what you are least sure of.
It runs in your web browser, on a phone, a tablet or a computer. There is nothing to install, and your progress is saved to your account, so it follows you from one device to the next.
How do I create an account?
- Open Create account.
- Enter your name, your email address and a password of at least eight characters.
- Confirm your email address from the link we send you. See How do I confirm my email address?
You can study the free cards as soon as you have registered, before you confirm.
What can I use for free?
A free account has ten cards from every deck, SQE1 and SQE2, so you can try each subject before you buy.
The rest of each deck is locked until you buy access. See Why are some cards locked?
Can I put FlipSQE on my phone’s home screen?
Yes. In your phone’s browser, open the menu and choose the option to add the page to your home screen (it is usually called “Add to Home Screen”). FlipSQE then opens full screen, like an app.
It is still the website, so you need an internet connection to study.
Studying
How does a study session work?
Press Review, in the menu or on your dashboard. Review gives you the cards that are due, then new cards, up to the number of new cards you have chosen for the day.
- Read the question and try to answer it in your head before you look.
- Press Show answer.
- Rate how well you remembered it: Again, Hard, Good or Easy. Each button shows how long it will be before you see the card again.
When nothing more is due and you have reached the day’s limit for new cards, the session ends and tells you when your next card comes back.
What do Again, Hard, Good and Easy mean?
- Again: you got it wrong or could not remember. The card comes back within minutes.
- Hard: you were right, but it took effort. You will see it again after a shorter gap.
- Good: you were right. The gap grows each time you are right.
- Easy: you were right at once. You will see it again after a longer gap.
Rate honestly. The schedule works best when it knows which cards you find hard.
How do the practice questions work?
A practice question asks for the single best answer from five options, A to E, which is the form SQE1 uses. Choose an option by tapping it, or press A to E (or 1 to 5).
You are then told which option was best and why. The options are shuffled each time a question comes round, so learn the reason, not the letter.
If you choose a wrong option, the card can only be rated Again, so that you see it again soon.
What is Practise mode?
On a deck’s page, Practise beside a chapter goes through every card in that chapter in order and leaves your schedule alone. A card you miss comes round once more at the end.
Use it to work through a chapter, or to look at cards that are not yet due. It shows up to 150 cards at a time, and it does not count towards your streak.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
- Space or Enter: show the answer.
- 1, 2, 3 and 4: rate the card Again, Hard, Good or Easy.
- A to E, or 1 to 5: choose an option on a practice question. Once you have chosen, the number keys rate the card.
- In Practise mode there are two buttons, Missed it and Got it, on 1 and 2.
A reminder appears at the foot of the study screen on larger screens.
How many new cards will I see each day?
That is up to you. Open Account and set New cards a day under Daily pace. It can be anything from 0 to 100, and it starts at 20.
Reviews of cards you have already started are never limited. Every new card comes back for review, so a higher number means more reviews in the days that follow. Set 0 to pause new cards and only review.
What does my assessment date do?
Under Assessment date on your Account page, enter the first day of your next sitting, SQE1 or SQE2. Your dashboard then counts down to it, and no card is scheduled for after you sit, so every card you have started comes round again in time.
How is my streak counted?
Your streak is the number of days in a row on which you rated at least one card in a review. Days are counted in UK time. If you miss a day, the streak starts again. Practise mode does not count.
What is on my dashboard?
- Today: the cards due now, the new cards you can start and how many you have reviewed today, with the button to begin.
- Streak: your current run of days, and the last seven days at a glance.
- Assessment countdown, once you have set a date.
- Progress by deck.
- Coming up: how many cards fall due over the next few days.
How do I find a card, or save one?
Press the bookmark button on a card to save it. Bookmarks in the menu lists everything you have saved.
Browse cards searches every card by the words in it. You can narrow the results to one deck, to Key figures or Law in transition, or to bookmarked cards only. Cards you have not unlocked are marked Locked.
What does “Law in transition” mean?
A card carries this label where the rule has changed recently, or is about to change. Candidates are tested on the law as it stood four calendar months before the first assessment in their window, so check these cards against your own cut-off date. About the content explains more.
Buying and access
Why are some cards locked?
Cards outside the free set open when you buy access in the FlipSQE shop. Access is sold in three ways:
- One SQE1 subject: all of its cards, including its mock papers.
- Every SQE1 subject, including any added while your access runs.
- Every SQE2 deck.
Each purchase runs for a fixed time. See How long does access last?
How do I buy access?
- In the app, open a locked deck or your Account page and press the Add … to basket button for what you want. You can also buy from the FlipSQE website.
- The shop’s basket opens. Check what is in it, then go to the checkout.
- Tick the box that asks for your purchase to be supplied straight away. It is the only box at the checkout. Choose how to pay, and pay.
Your cards open within seconds of payment.
If you press the button while you are signed in to the app, the purchase goes to your account whatever email address you pay with. If you buy from the website instead, we match the purchase to the email address you pay with. See I have paid, but my cards are still locked.
How much does it cost, and how do I pay?
Prices are shown on the FlipSQE website and in your basket, with the total before you pay. They are shown with UK VAT included where it applies to you, and your order email shows the VAT and our VAT number.
At the checkout you are offered the ways of paying that are available to you. Payment is taken by Stripe, so we never see or store your full card number.
How long does access last?
Every access product runs for a fixed time from the day you pay, and its page says how long (at present, six months). The date yours ends is on your Account page, under Your access.
When it ends, the cards outside the free set lock again. Your progress is kept, and it is all still there if you renew.
I have paid, but my cards are still locked.
Access normally opens within seconds of payment. If yours has not, go through these in order.
- Reload the page, then look under Your access on your Account page.
- Confirm your email address. A purchase made on the website is added only to an account whose email address is confirmed. Look for our email, and in your spam folder, or ask for a new link from your dashboard or Account page.
- Check the address you paid with. If you have no account yet, register with the address you paid with and confirm it: the purchase is added then. If you paid with a different address from your account’s, write to us.
- Still locked? Write to support@flipsqe.co.uk with your order number and the email address of your account.
How do I confirm my email address?
When you register we email you a link. It works once and is good for 24 hours.
- Open the link.
- Press the confirmation button on the page that opens. You must be logged in to the account the link was sent for. Opening the link alone does nothing.
No email? Look in your spam folder, then ask for a new link from your dashboard or Account page. You can ask for one a minute.
If you registered with the wrong address, it cannot be changed. Delete the account (see How do I delete my account?) and register again with the right one.
Can I buy something I already have?
No. The shop does not let you pay twice for the same thing. It refuses a product whose cards your account still has, and it will not put two products that give the same cards in one basket.
If what you have is nearly over, see How do I renew or extend my access?
How do I renew or extend my access?
In the last 30 days of any access, your Account page shows Extend beside it. After it has ended, it shows Renew. It is the same product at the same price, and the new time starts when the old time ends, so buying early loses nothing.
Before the last 30 days the shop will not sell it again. If you are signed in, it tells you the date it opens.
I have one subject. Can I add the others?
Yes. Buy another subject, or every SQE1 subject. If you buy every SQE1 subject, the time you have left on a single subject is not lost or paid for twice: it is moved to follow the new access.
Can I get a refund?
Everything sold here is digital and is supplied as soon as you pay, so we do not give refunds. Read the refund terms before you buy.
This does not affect your legal rights. If what you bought is faulty, is not as described or is not fit for its purpose, tell us and we will correct or replace it.
How do I get the course PDF?
SQE2: The Complete Course is sold as a PDF to download. After payment, the email that confirms your order, and the order page, give you a link to the file. You can use the link again.
The SQE2 pass that includes the course PDF gives you the file and every SQE2 deck in one purchase.
Your account
I have forgotten my password.
- On the log-in page, choose Forgotten your password?
- Enter the email address of your account.
- Open the link we email to you and choose a new password of at least eight characters.
The link works once and lasts one hour. The page gives the same answer whether or not the address has an account, so if no email arrives, check your spam folder and that you used the address you registered with.
How do I change my password?
Use Forgotten your password? It works whether or not you are signed in.
Can I change my name or my email address?
You can change your name on your Account page. An account’s email address cannot be changed. If yours is wrong, see How do I confirm my email address?
How do I delete my account?
Open Account, find Delete account, type DELETE and press Delete my account. Your account, your progress and your bookmarks are removed at once and cannot be recovered.
Any access you have bought goes with the account. Do not delete an account that still has time left on it. The record of what was bought is kept with the shop’s record of the order.
What does FlipSQE store about me?
The Privacy page says what is stored, why, and how to have it deleted.
Does FlipSQE use cookies?
The app sets only the cookies that keep you signed in and protect its forms. It sets no advertising cookies and no analytics cookies. The FlipSQE website asks you before it sets its own analytics cookies.
About the cards
Where do the cards come from?
Every card is newly written from the books it is drawn from: SQE2: The Complete Course for SQE2, and each subject’s own workbook and treatise for SQE1. They are not copied from the books. About the content names the books for each subject and the date the law is stated at.
How far can I rely on the law in the cards?
The cards are a careful summary, not a substitute for the primary source. Only some of the law in them has been checked against official sources. About the content says exactly what was checked and what was not, and you should read it.
I think a card is wrong.
Please tell us. Write to support@flipsqe.co.uk with the deck, the chapter and the words on the card, and say what you think is wrong.
Is FlipSQE approved by the SRA?
No. FlipSQE is an independent study resource. It is not produced, endorsed or approved by the Solicitors Regulation Authority or Kaplan, and it is not legal advice.
